About Achievement Connections

400 students need math tutors. when will you start? achievement connections - math tutoring

Achievement Connections developed out of Schools of Hope elementary tutoring program, who has origins as a civic journalism project of the Wisconsin State Journal and WISC-TV in 1995. United Way of Dane County soon adopted the program. Initially the purpose of the partnership was to improve the academic performance for third grade reading in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD). Because of Schools of Hope's successful track record in recruiting volunteer literacy tutors, the program was expanded in 2003 to include middle school and high school math and reading programs. Over the years the program has developed.

At the high school level, the program has been reinvigorated and reintroduced as Achievement Connections with the goal of increasing the number of students who complete Algebra 1 by 10th grade.

Why the Program is Important to Student Success

Completing Algebra by the 10th grade is a leading indicator that a student will graduate from high school. Achievement Connections is aimed at maximizing the success rates in 9th grade Algebra, to improve overall academic success in Dane County. Students are recommended to the program by their math teachers, and must possess a desire to improve to stay in the program. Achievement Connections also provides tutoring to 10th graders in Geometry to continue supporting students through key high school math courses.
